Lake District Area
Lake District Area covers the whole of Cumbria and the northern part of Lancashire, including the Lake District National Park and a small part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Area has more than 2,300 members in seven local groups; an eighth group, caters for people in their 20s and 30s all over the area.
Local groups work with the public and with local authorities to solve footpath problems; survey and clear footpaths; arrange walks for members; and publish guide books for walkers. The groups are:
Carlisle & North Cumbria Carlisle group’s territory is bounded by the Pennines, the Scottish border, the Solway Firth, and the northern Lake District. It includes Aspatria, Bewcastle, Brampton, Caldbeck, Carlisle, Dalston, Longtown, and Wigton.
Furness group occupies the south-western corner of Cumbria, including that part of the Lake District National Park between Windermere and Dunnerdale. Barrow-in-Furness, Broughton, Coniston, Dalton, Millom, and Ulverston are within the group’s territory.
Grange-over-Sands is at the head of Morecambe Bay. The group is responsible for the area between the bay and the southern end of lake Windermere, most of which is inside the Lake District National Park. Its territory includes Cartmel, Crosthwaite, Grange-over-Sands, and Newby Bridge.
Kendal group’s territory is in south-east Cumbria, from the Lancashire border to Langdale in the centre of the Lake District National Park. It includes Ambleside, Arnside, Bowness, Burton-in-Kendal, Grasmere, Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe, and Windermere.
Lancaster group is responsible for the Lancaster District of Lancashire, the Lune Valley, the north-west Forest of Bowland, and Dentdale and Garsdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This area includes Carnforth, Dent, Heysham, Lancaster, Morecambe, Sedbergh, and Silverdale.
Penrith group’s territory is in east Cumbria, stretching from Ullswater to the Pennines. It includes Alston, Appleby, Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Kirkoswald, Penrith, Shap, and Tebay.
Summit Good is a walking group for people in their 20s and 30s. It has no territory. It is based in the south of Cumbria, but membership is not restricted to that area.
West Cumbria group covers the west coast from south of the River Esk to the Solway Firth, and a large tract of the Lake District National Park from Eskdale to Skiddaw. It includes Cockermouth, Keswick, Maryport, Ravenglass, Silloth, Whitehaven, and Workington.
