The Ramblers’ Association (RA) promotes walking in the countryside, protects footpaths and other places over which the public has a right of way or access on foot, and defends the beauty of the countryside.

The RA in the UK (England, Scotland, and Wales) has more than 140,000 members in 54 Areas and over 450 local groups.

Lake District Area of the RA covers the whole of Cumbria and the northern part of Lancashire, including the Lake District National Park and a small part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Lake District Area has more than 2,300 members in seven local groups based on Carlisle, Furness, Grange-over-Sands, Kendal, Lancaster, Penrith, and West Cumbria. An eighth group, Summit Good, caters for people in their 20s and 30s throughout the area.

Affiliated clubs 21 walking clubs are affiliated to Lake District Area.

Walks Lake District Area organises more than 800 walks each year for its members. Visitors who are interested in the Ramblers’ Association are welcome to join us on these walks.

The Gordon Walker Chalet in the Newlands Valley provides cheap self-catering accommodation for up to 16 people (eight men and eight women). It is open for a small charge to any member of the Ramblers’ Association or of an affiliated club.
